Abstract

This article aims to study the genealogy of Syafii Maarif's thought which includes the influence of the environment and intellectual figures on the reconstruction of his thought on Islam and Indonesia's future. As a Muslim scholar, Syafii Maarif is concerned with issues related to Islam and the future based on reading the complexity of the problems of Muslims both globally and in Indonesia. To Achieve these objectives, qualitative research was employed by way of library research in addition to content analysis methods that were fully used in the process of data collection and analysis. Findings show that there are three phases of the reconstruction of Syafii Maarif's thought on Islam and the future of Indonesia: 1) the phase of the thoughts and personality formation under the influence of the Minangkabau, Muhammadiyah environments, and the members of Masyumi Party following Abu A'la Al-Maududi's Thought on the Islamic state, 2) the phase of mature thinking process under Fazlur Rahman's Neo-Modernism and Muhammad Iqbal's modernism approach, 3) the phase of implication of the thoughts in the Indonesian context which was influenced by the thoughts of Ibn Khaldun, Toynbee and Muhammad Hatta.
