Abstract

The term religious tolerance refers to an attitude of mutual respect, openness, and acceptance of the rights of individuals from different faiths to practice their respective beliefs without prejudice or hostility. It serves as a fundamental pillar in fostering harmony and unity among the people in a multi-ethnic and multi- religious nation such as Malaysia. This paper aims to explore the definition and conceptual understanding of religious tolerance, the contributing factors that influence the practice of tolerance, its benefits for social well-being, the current challenges it faces, and the strategies that can be implemented to strengthen religious tolerance within the Malaysian context. A review of the pieces of literature reveals that the practice of tolerance often begins within the family and school environments, influenced by open and inclusive social settings, as well as religious education with a universal and progressive outlook. Among the key benefits of religious tolerance are social peace, stable community relations, and the strengthening of national unity. However, contemporary challenges include widespread misconceptions about the true meaning of tolerance, the dissemination of contradictory or biased information through various media platforms, and a general lack of interfaith understanding, that is further compounded by political and social factors. To address these challenges, strategies such as multi-faith education, interreligious dialogue, and, critically, collaborative efforts among the government, religious institutions, and civil society must be prioritised. In conclusion, the reinforcement of religious tolerance demands the collective awareness of all Malaysians regarding the supremacy of the Federal Constitution, the integration of tolerance values within the education system, and the active engagement of all stakeholders in safeguarding the social harmony of the nation.
