Abstract

This study explores the Islamic framework for sustainable development as an integrative alternative to the dominant Western model. While global efforts have mainly emphasized economic, social, and environmental dimensions, the Western approach is often criticized for neglecting the ethical and spiritual aspects essential for balanced development. Islam, in contrast, offers a holistic perspective based on the concepts of khalifah (vicegerency) and imarah (stewardship), integrating three main dimensions: human development—spiritually, intellectually, and physically; societal development through justice and social solidarity; and environmental protection as a trust for future generations. The framework is founded on key principles, including the responsibility of humans to manage resources justly (khalifah), comprehensive justice balancing present and future rights, and moderation that discourages waste and promotes responsible resource use. Moreover, the objectives (maqasid) of Shariah provide a coherent analytical structure linking religious values with development outcomes. These include preservation of life by ensuring access to food and health, preservation of intellect through education and knowledge, preservation of lineage by supporting family rights and equality, preservation of wealth via economic justice, and preservation of religion as the ethical guide for all dimensions. By integrating spiritual and material considerations, the Islamic framework offers a distinctive and comprehensive approach to sustainable development. This study emphasizes its potential to enrich global discussions and provide a balanced model that addresses both ethical values and practical policies, fostering development that is equitable, responsible, and sustainable for communities and nations alike.
