A comparative analysis of the Quran interpretation methodologies of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas and Nurcholish Madjid reveals different approaches that impact the interpretation of the Qur'anic text in contemporary contexts. The main issue of this study lies in the significant differences between the traditional and contextual approaches adopted by these two figures, raising questions about the effectiveness of their methodologies in addressing the challenges faced by modern Muslim communities. Thus, this study aims to identify the similarities and differences in their approaches and to assess their relevance in dealing with current issues. This study used a qualitative method by analysing the primary works from both figures as well as relevant secondary references. Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas emphasises a traditional approach grounded in Islamic epistemology, which focuses on the integrity of knowledge rooted in divine revelation. In contrast, Nurcholish Madjid prioritises a reformist and contextual approach that aligns Quran interpretation with the social and historical context of the Muslim community. The findings of the study indicate that despite clear differences in their approaches, both scholars share a common goal of preserving Islamic values to stay relevant over the periods. Al-Attas stresses the protection of tradition, whereas Nurcholish highlights renewal. This study contributes significantly to understanding the diversity of Qur'anic interpretive methodologies and their implications for the development of contemporary Islamic thought.Downloads
